Fort McMurray Wildfire

A message from Patricia

Last night I found myself headed to Grasslands to meet my daughter who had been evacuated from Fort McMurray. Like many, she had car troubles and a very kind family took her in, under their wing and saw to it that she arrived safely in Grasslands to meet me.

After the time that I spent driving the 63 over the past 6 years, I noticed a different feeling in the traffic, while usually littered with the odd racer, chance taker or road rager- Last night and this morning were different. Everyone was driving safely and with much courtesy. Slow and steady, the safe way to drive.  While at the Flying J in Grassland, I saw people who were crying, uncertain, even lost. In contrast to that, there were others, speaking softly, comforting the shocked, distraught and offering help, although they also had nothing.  That being said I wanted to take a moment and applaud the citizens of Fort McMurray for their kind, caring, safe, well executed evacuation over the past 24 hours. It is heart wrenching to watch the city that I love become engulfed in flames.  While parts of our team lost everything, I am happy to report that all of the people who form the Matrix Team are safe.

In the coming days, weeks, months and years, We will all come together, step up and help the residents of Fort McMurray restart and rebuild.  I am personally committed to this initiative and there will be more information provided in the coming days.

We will also be posting volunteer opportunities to our connect site. When it is safe, if you are looking to volunteer or looking for volunteers, you will find them at our website.

In the meantime, stay safe.
